Seasonal immune function and sickness responses.

چکیده

Winter is a particularly difficult time to breed and survive. Animals monitor day length (photoperiod) to engage seasonally appropriate adaptations in anticipation of harsh winter conditions. I propose that photoperiodic information, mediated by melatonin, might also influence immune responses. Individuals could improve survival if seasonally recurring stressors were anticipated and countered. Recent studies suggest that short day lengths reroute energy from reproduction and growth to bolster immune function during winter. Short days can either enhance or suppress components of immune function, as well as reduce fever and the expression of sickness behaviors. The net result of these photoperiod-mediated adjustments is enhanced immune function and increased survival. Melatonin appears to be part of an integrated system that coordinates reproductive, immunological and other processes to cope successfully with energetic stressors during winter and to balance trade-offs between reproductive success and survival.

Leptin, a neuroendocrine mediator of immune responses, inflammation, and sickness behaviors.

Effective immune responses are coordinated by interactions among the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems. Mounting immune, inflammatory, and sickness responses requires substantial energetic investments, and as such, an organism may need to balance energy allocation to these processes with the energetic demands of other competing physiological systems. The metabolic hormone leptin appears to...

Seasonal modulation of sickness behavior in free-living northwestern song sparrows (Melospiza melodia morphna).

A variety of vertebrate species modulate immune function on a seasonal basis to cope with seasonal energy deficits and competing life-history demands, such as reproduction. Most studies to date have focused upon seasonal variation of cellular and humoral immunity, while neglecting behavioral responses to infection. These behavioral strategies are collectively termed sickness behaviors and are h...

Gonadal hormone-dependent and -independent regulation of immune function by photoperiod in Siberian hamsters.

Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus) exhibit changes in reproductive and immune function in response to seasonal variations in day length. Exposure to short days induces gonadal regression and inhibits testosterone secretion. In parallel, short days enhance immune function: increasing leukocyte numbers and attenuating cytokine and behavioral responses to infection. We examined whether photoper...

Leptin mediates seasonal variation in some but not all symptoms of sickness in Siberian hamsters.

Many seasonally breeding species, including Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus), exhibit seasonal variation in sickness responses. One hypothesis regarding the mechanism of this variation is that sickness intensity tracks an animal's energetic state, such that sickness is attenuated in the season that an animal has the lowest fat stores. Energetic state may be signaled via leptin, an adipose ...

Seasonal Patterns of Stress, Disease, and Sickness Responses

The combined challenge of low food availability and low temperatures can make winter difficult for survival, and nearly impossible for breeding. Traditionally, studies of seasonality have focused on reproductive adaptations and largely ignored adaptations associated with survival. We propose shifting the focus from reproduction to immune function, a proxy for survival, and hypothesize that evol...
